What is Halcion?
Halcion is a prescription drug used as short-term relief for insomnia. Insomnia should not be treated long-term by Halcion. Chronic insomnia may be due to an undiagnosed cause and treatment with Halcion will mask this cause.
Halcion is a controlled substance and belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which have a sedating effect by enhancing a critical chemical that slows activity in the brain. The dosage will depend on the nature and severity of the insomnia symptoms. Halcion should be prescribed at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest period of time possible. Before taking Halcion, tell your doctor about your medical conditions and history. Halcion is an addictive drug and dependence can occur quickly. Halcion is not intended for frequent or long-term use. Halcion can have withdrawal symptoms when discontinued, such as muscle cramps, seizures, fever, sweating, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and headaches. Withdrawal symptoms can be life-threatening and/or can last for many months if the patient has taken Halcion for a long time. Halcion should be discontinued only under the supervision of a doctor.
