What is Halcion?

Halcion is a prescription drug used as short-term relief for insomnia. Insomnia should not be treated long-term by Halcion. Chronic insomnia may be due to an undiagnosed cause and treatment with Halcion will mask this cause.

Halcion is a controlled substance and belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which have a sedating effect by enhancing a critical chemical that slows activity in the brain. The dosage will depend on the nature and severity of the insomnia symptoms. Halcion should be prescribed at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest period of time possible. Before taking Halcion, tell your doctor about your  medical conditions and history. Tell your doctor about any medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, as well as vitamins and supplements. Certain medications or substances (such as opioid pain medicines, muscle relaxants, other anxiety or sleep medications, or alcohol) can interact with Halcion and should not be combined, due to the possibility of serious side effects which could include loss of consciousness, slowed or stopped breathing, coma, and death. Misuse of Halcion can cause addiction, overdose, or death. Keep Halcion where no one else can get to it. Keep securely out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Halcion?

Halcion is a potent sedative and hypnotic (sleep-inducing) drug, so the most common side effects are sleepiness, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and loss of coordination. Other common side effects include headache, irritability, and changes in menstrual periods.

The most hazardous side effects caused by Halcion are complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking, sleep sex, sleep cooking and eating, and, most hazardous of all, sleep driving, which is getting out of bed while asleep and driving a vehicle. Patients typically do not remember these events. Halcion must be discontinued if you do any of these activities while taking Halcion.

Mental and mood changes are possible side effects and may include depression, excitability, irritability, agitation, confusion, and suicidal thoughts.

Allergic reactions to Halcion are uncommon and may include swelling, rash, or trouble breathing. These symptoms require emergency medical attention.

Halcion is an addictive drug and dependence can occur quickly. Halcion is not intended for frequent or long-term use. Halcion can have withdrawal symptoms when discontinued, such as muscle cramps, seizures, fever, sweating, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and headaches. Withdrawal symptoms can be life-threatening and/or can last for many months if the patient has taken Halcion for a long time. Halcion should be discontinued only under the supervision of a doctor.

Halcion should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
